Day 4 : Perlis

Thursday, July 30, 2009

Hey everybody!

It seems that it's been a while since we left KL, but heck.. its just Thursday! Time passes by very the fast and we didn't realize it till today because we were just busy collecting signatures.

Updates for today - from Alor Setar, we drove on to Kangar and went to the Pekan Batu Pahat Scouts Centre. At the centre, there was about 70 of them who was eager for our car to arrive and they were quite happy to see us as we were excited to see them. :) When the Rangers reached the scouts camp, we were really touched and surprised that they actually prepared a welcome banner with the Telur Mobile on it!

Not only the support that we have received from them, but also it feels good for us to actually talk to the group and also receiving a lot of interest from them on what is the cause all about. Ok, before I continue.. Most of you would know that I'm 26 years of age. What I'm trying to say here is that you don't need to be a mature age to start on something (ie a cause, an action.. anythinglah), if you feel like it.. just do it!

For example our dear lil Adam last night. A 3 year old boy managed to get 12 signatures in less than 20 minutes!

Back to our updates for today, we spent quite a while at the Scouts camp as the participants were quite interested on listening to what the Rangers had to say.. seriously, we felt so motivated with the support that we have received and so far, its been a good 2 days!

As we were in town in Kangar, we were recommended to go to the Kuala Perlis jetty to catch some of the crowd there. The best thing about being in Kuala Perlis is they have a darn good range of seafood places over there.. so we're stuffed. =)

After dinner, the Rangers was actually at the seafood court car park to get more signatures and the response was really awesome! Out of all who replied to this cause, we did not get much rejection on the Egg=Life campaign. Everyone who we approached was all excited about the cause! What makes me feel so touched was one of the girls from the gerai actually came after me as i was about to leave and asked me whether she can have some forms so that she can help. Her name is Ila and she's from Kuala Perlis. I asked her a question, why was she so interested to help the Telur Rangers. And she said:

"When you guys came and talked to us, I just felt like I need to do something. It's my birthday tomorrow and I want to be a part of something special. Thanks to you all, I found that special thing!"

Awwwwww.....

So guys, if someone who is a stranger to me and strongly supported the cause that I was doing.. isn't that exciting news? So when will be your turn? ;D

Okay, need to sleep now. Early day tomorrow!

Monyets who love turtles

Hey everyone,

We've had a very fruitfull (or should i say signaturfull) day in Alor Setar today.
It's almost 2am and i'm about to hit the sack. But just wanted to bring to your attention another group of people who love turtles just as much as we do.

Check out planetofthemonyets.blogspot.com

Monyeters,
this is what a real dead turtle looks like :(

Dead adult Hawksbill turtle

The same poor turtle as above

Dead jevenile Hawksbill Turtle

Guys turtles already have enough challenges out there in our polluted oceans. The last thing they need is some one eating thier babies....

Save the turtles, Save the world!

Our journey continues...

Hello helllo every one! We've crossed the 700 mark on our FB fan page and we'd like to thank each and every one of you for your wonderful support! Our colleagues and friends who have contributed so much to making this idea a success - we salute you and love you MUAKS! To those who have agreed to be Telur Rangers and collect signatures as well - You rock! Tq tq!

This is the third day of our journey and along with the fun and excitement comes the many challenges such as car trouble, getting lost, falling behind schedule, tiredness and most demotivating of all are the rejections that we face! Sometimes people simply refuse to even listen to us. And at the end of each long day we're so beat all we want to do is crawl under the sheets and snore so if our posts are sometimes a bit lucid- it's cos we're so tired we can't think!

But today has been a great encouragement for us. Apart from the friendly and may i add very helpful crowd in Alor Setar, the wonderful staff of Hotel Seri Malaysia (thank you every one!) we also got the support of En Fauzi of Giant Alor Setar. Not only has En Fauzi been so kind to be our venue sponsor on very short notice, he has pledged the signatures of his 100+ staff in support of our cause! That really gave our spirits a boost and gives us reason to continue our fight. We sure could use more Malaysians like En Fauzi :)

Best of all, he recommended us a place for awesome foot reflexology - sakit giler! But the sifu(s) knew exactly what we needed. And after 40 mins of pain therapy our pains and aches melted away :)

As you know the objective of our road trip, further to collecting signatures, is to educate Malaysians about the terrible fate of these gentle creatures.
Today i was asked this question - "i learned from documentaries that turtles lay more than 100 eggs at one nesting, with such numbers why do they need saving?"
DID YOU KNOW: Only 1 out of every 1,000 baby turtles survive and mature into adulthood
CONSIDER ALSO: It takes 30 years for a baby turtle to mature into adulthood

And with poaching, coastal development, trapping and killing in fishing gear and their shells being made into decorative products - the odds are stacked high against these helpless creatures. Turtles play an essential role in keeping the balance of the oceanus ecosystem. They feed on jellyfish and keep them from being overpopulated. Their dwindling numbers means an increase of jellyfish - this creates an imbalance in the ocean's ecosystem and that in turn affects our fisheries. We may not see the effects of this on our daily lives immediately but when not only will our fish supply be affected, those whose livelihoods depend on the ocean will also suffer.

Well that's all for today folks (so sleepy tears running down my eyes and nose already) hope to have more telur stories for you tomorrow :)) Cheers!

Why are we doing this again?

Wednesday, July 29, 2009

"Turtles play a critical role in keeping marine ecosystems healthy; the same ecosystems which sustain our fisheries and tourism industries that provide food and livelihoods for millions of people. Marine turtles are threatened with extinction due to various factors, including: the practice of consuming turtle eggs, marine and nesting beach pollution as well as illegal trade of turtles and their parts.

Leatherback turtles have already been declared functionally extinct in Malaysia. In the 1950s, there were 10,000 leatherback nests in Rantau Abang each year; now there are less than 10. Moreover, turtle protection laws are inadequate. Please sign up and help save turtles!"

Your signature confirms your support for the WWF-Malaysia “Egg = Life” Campaign for better protection of marine turtles through the following:
  1. Support laws that will ban the sale and consumption of all turtle eggs throughout Malaysia
  2. Support the call for comprehensive and holistic Federal legislation to conserve marine turtles
  3. Pledge never to consume turtle eggs, or trade in turtles or their parts
So give us your signature. By meeting up with us on our road trip. Or printing the petition form and collecting signatures on your own. Or by pledging online at www.saveturtles.my

We need your help. The turtles need your help.

Day 2: Prai & Penang

Good evening everyone!

It's been a loooong but fruitful day - we were in Prai and then Penang today.
Here's how the day started for us -
Patrick and Mr Lim trying to identify and fix the problem...

Check out our facebook fan page for the video of how this happened!

While the men discuss cars, here's what we girls were doing :))

As some of you may have noticed in our last posting there was a man driving the car - well that's Patrick from AMC Motors (the car sponsor) who is driving the long legs of our journey - it's a 30-year old VW Beetle you see, needs someone who knows it well!

Case in point - right after breakfast we had to send it in to give us aircond and for another round of minor fine-tuning...

And here in this pix is Patrick's local friend in Ipoh Mr Lim who's helping us out and videographer/ photographer Stephen Hogg who is helping to document our journey - thank you guys what would we do without all of you??

While waiting for the car we took to doing signature drives at the coffee shops within walking distance of the car workshop and the response was very encouraging.

So when the car was finally ready we proceded to Carrefour Prai.

We got lost on the way but after an hour or so finally found it. After a pretty fruitful 2 hours in Carrefour Prai, we left for Burma Street to where our hotel was located.

After freshening up and some much-needed rest, we set up our Turtle Mobile at Gurney Plaza for more signature hollering! Check our facebook fan page for the video!

Many many thanx to Gurney Plaza for agreeing to have us under such short notice! Here's or Turtle Mobile at Gurney Plaza -

We'd like to thank each and every one of you who popped by Gurney Plaza to support us, thank you and we love you!

We'll be in Sg Petani tomorrow so sure hope to see ya'll there!

Pop by our Facebook fan page for more videos of our journey! Tata~~

You can be a Telur Ranger too

Tuesday, July 28, 2009

.
Just download the sign-up form. Print as many as you'd like. And start collecting signatures to ban the sale of turtle eggs. Get your colleagues at work to put their signature on the white turtle eggs. Your school mates. Your entire family.

We're aiming to collect 100,000 signatures. We need your help.

Then pass us the completed forms when we drop by your town. (Check our schedule on our Facebook page). Or if you can't make it to one of our stops, post us the forms at the end of our road trip. We'll gave you an address once we get back to KL.

Every signature you collect helps give life to a turtle.

Day 1: Ipoh - The first leg

Hey all,

It has been a productive day and the rangers are now in Ipoh! We had our official launch this morning in Carrefour (our venue sponsors) , Tropicana City Mall and it was definitely a success as we had quite a number of the media and members of the public admiring our cute Telur Mobile. :)

As per previous post where we mentioned that the car had to be sent back to the workshop for last minute tune-ups, we finally left KL at about 6pm and went on the NKVE towards Ipoh.

The ride. Hilarious I tell you.

Why?

1st LOL moment - we had to squeeze in the Telur Mobile and was crushed by the bags.

2nd LOL moment - when we got into the car we found out that the air-cond was busted, so we had to drive all the way to Ipoh with no air-cond. Thank god it didn't rain until we got near, but what we got was:

Nell with the Orang Gila look. Heh. But definitely it was fun.

There you go.. the 3 Rangers, with the breezy funk look. =P

About 930pm, the rangers reached Jusco Kinta City with the honk machine (thanks to Huey Meim) and managed to get some curious looks from the people who were in the mall. We parked at the entrance of Jusco and got down to get some signatures and we managed to collect about 70 signatures in less than an hour! Much appreciated!

Its late and we gotta wake up early tomorrow to start off on our 2nd leg (Ipoh-Penang). So for all of you who will be in Penang, come and support us at Carrefour Prai (from 1230pm - onwards) and in the evening we will be in Batu Feringghi and Gurney Drive. Watch out for The Telur Ranger Tweets!

That's more like it! The Telur Rangers car was unveiled this morning at Carrefour Tropicana City. Many thanks to AMC Motors for sponsoring the classic VW Beetle.

Don't break your back. Everyone wants a shot of the Telur Rangers. Catch us on our expedition of Peninsular Malaysia in our bid to collect 100,000 signatures in support of the campaign to ban the sale of turtle eggs.

That's us there. See you at the next stop later this evening.... IPOH! Right after a short visit to the car workshop for a last-minute tune-up.

We have just received the very sad news that our beloved Yasmin Ahmad has returned to His side. As our little tribute we will be cutting our signature drive tomorrow short - we''ll be there 12noon - 1pm, Sunway Pyramid Main Entrance.

We're terribly sorry for the last minute change but we would like to pay Yasmin our last respects tomorrow, we hope you'll understand.

Saturday, July 25, 2009

Hellooo everyone,

Terribly sorry for the inactivity on our blog, we've changed and improved its look!
This new and more refreshing look is with many thanx to our wonderful colleagues in Arc Interactive, who have been helping us troubleshoot since yesterday - you guys rock!

Our second excuse for keeping mum for an entire day of course is that we've been absolutely and totally swamped -
1. completing work and tying up loose ends so our bosses don't fire our a**es
(Tq bosses u da bestest :)
2. firming up arrangements for our trip!

And YES! after much ding dong-ing, letter writing and various challenges, we have finallllly confirmed the route we will be taking this coming two weeks.

We have left some flexibility in our schedule (notice we have no specific venue yet for certain towns) so based on the towns we've set, we'd like YOU to tell us - WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE THE TELUR RANGERS TO STOP?

Tell us tell us! And we will try our very best to stop where you recommend.

We will however, need you to lend us your support by bringing ALLLL your family and friends to sign our petition :))

Here is the schedule:

Also, we took a peek at our car in the work shop! The sticker was half done - here's what it looks like:

We're so xcited!!!

So don't forget, our first stop: Sunway Pyramid Main Entrance on Sunday.
See you all there!

Whats coming?

Tuesday, July 21, 2009

Hi all!

It's getting nearer to the date.. and there's so much things to do!

Huey Meim did mentioned earlier that our colleagues has been helping us to prepare for this roadtrip.. and one of the things that they have come up with is the design for the turtle car!

We think its pretty cool that we're going ol skool.. and the reason why we chose the VW Beetle is because of the shape which is quite similar to a turtle.. Imagine.. driving around the whole Malaysia in the turtle car!

At the planning stage, we were thinking that we should have a car to attract people and also to create curiosity on whats going on... so the trio approached AMC Motors ( a group of enthusiasts who share a common interest in classic cars ) to see whether they are interested in lending us a classic VW Beetle for this cause and they were very keen on the idea! So thanks to them, we now have a car to drive around for our roadtrip!

So many things to plan, so many things to do!

More updates on the preparations coming this way!

It's getting nearer!

Monday, July 20, 2009

Good morning everybody!

Would like to add on to Huey Meim’s post that she mentioned we are going on a 2 weeks roadtrip, covering the whole peninsular Malaysia and seriously, the planning is all not easy. However, looking at how things are progressing.. it looks like its going to turn out to be a wonderful trip out!

By the way, when we first heard about the Egg=Life pledge drive, they were aiming at collecting 40,000 signatures from the public. So then, the trio was thinking since we are going on a drive around this part of Malaysia, why not raise the bar to 100,000 signatures? We’re being very optimistic about this and am sure that as Malaysians, we are hoping that the crowds that we approach would support us in this effort. =)

To some of the people that I’ve mentioned on this project, they were being quite “wahhhh.. so jealous… can go jalan jalan one!” but to tell you guys honestly, this is definitely more to a mission of creating awareness and a call to support the petition for stricter laws against poaching and the sale of turtle eggs.

SOME FACT FINDING

Turtle conservation falls under the jurisdiction of individual state governments

It is illegal to consume and sell turtle eggs in East Malaysia

There are no laws banning the sale and consumption of turtle eggs in any Peninsular states except for Terengganu

In Terengganu, its illegal to eat and sell leatherback turtle eggs (which by the way has been declared extinct in Malaysia), but there is no legislation protecting the eggs of the other three species of marine turtle that land on our shores ie. Hawksbill, Green and Ridley Olive turtles.

Oh yea, did we tell you that we are going to drive around in a turtle car? =)

Cheers,

Nell

What is this???

Sunday, July 19, 2009

Ok, so you must be wondering what this fuss is all about, bear with me, i'll explain...

So my colleague Nell pledged her support to save the turtles and started convincing (or trying to convince) everyone in office to do the same :) I heard about it, thought it was awesome and signed up as well (Check Egg=Life at www.wwf.org.my).

Talking one day, we came up with this idea of a road trip to help collect signatures to help the cause. Other colleagues chipped in some marvelous ideas, we approached WWF with it, they loved it, sed they'd give us support and contacts, and most importantly Grace voted in on our wild idea so with help from all our wonderful colleagues voila -- here we are!

We've named ourselves the Telur Rangers for obvious reasons :) We want to be little heroes and chip in to save our turtle friends from ending up somebody's snack.

DO YOU KNOW -- Turtle eggs are considered a delicacy and many eat them under the impression they are nutritious but this is NOT TRUE. In fact, turtle eggs are found to be less nutritious than chicken eggs. There you have it, eat chicken eggs la, better for you.

Anyhoo, so we're in the midst of planning our two-week round Peninsular road trip and let me tell ya it's not easy-peasy! Ok so we anticipated some challenges with this bizarre idea but it's turning out to be quite the challenge. But thankfully we have wonderful friends and colleagues who are chipping in to help - Thank you guys, we love you! - so our plan is slowly but very surely being pieced together YAY!

We're taking off next Monday (July 27) and there's still much to do! Places to stop, places to stay, what to bring, what to wear gosh gosh gosh! Ok I'm gonna have a panic attack just thinking about them so gonna bring this post to an end - Lend us your support by signing up and following our journey :)

Our First Post!

Friday, July 17, 2009

Finally, our blog is up!

This would be a welcome note, so hello to all of you. =)

As the Telur Rangers consists of three members and we will be continuously updating you on the activities that we are going to do in order to support the cause on saving the turtles, we dont want to confuse you on who is updating what.

The Telur Rangers consist of:

Huey Meim - will be writing in green
Nell - will be writing in orange
Grace- will be writing in blue

And white will be everything in between!

Watch this space for more stories!
